BCM325 Beta Presentation

Hi everyone! Welcome to my BCM325 Beta presentation.

As stated in my Beta presentation, I am exploring future technologies in the hairdressing industry. I posted my first blog post in week 6 and my second blog post is due to be posted next week (week 9). I am still working on building up my engagement on my wordpress page by sharing my blog posts to twitter and linked in.
In the past I’ve only used Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest as platforms for my digital artefact. Although I have used WordPress for the duration I have been at University, I am still not completely familiar with methods to attract and engage a niche audience. So if anyone has any tips or experience, please share your knowledge with me.

Thanks for reading!
– Ashlan

Welcome to leaving any feedback, comments or suggestions.

  1. Hi Ashlan,

Firstly, I’d like to commend you for your ability to convey information in a clear and concise manner, and for how refined your project timeline is – you have clearly thought-out this project very well.

The future of hairdressing is a very interesting topic, because consumer preferences and expectations are constantly evolving, as is the industry itself. Now is a perfect time to consider the future of the industry because of the disruptions that COVID-19 has caused to it. I can’t say I am well-versed in the area, but I found a resource which might be useful to you: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jun/26/jobs-future-automation-robots-skills-creative-health. It explains what may happen to jobs (hairdressing gets a mention) in 20 years because of automation.

Also, for the 25 year blog post, instead of presenting research findings, could you imagine what the technology may become and give your own thoughts? This could help further engage your followers, as it will give them an opportunity to provide their own input.

You are really good at putting together videos – would you consider creating videos along with your blogs (like 1-minute recaps of them) to boost engagement, and give you some enticing content to share on other channels to grab attention from your audiences?

How are you going to further relate this project to subject content? You mentioned that it relates to week 6, but I would say this is only loosely connected. You might benefit from looking at Wendell Bell’s three-part thinking structure about possible, probable and preferable futures in relation to hairdressing (more info here: http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.168.3943&rep=rep1&type=pdf). And, could you incorporate the novums contained in the films we have viewed to speculate about where the future of hairdressing may go?

  2. Hey Ashlan! I really like your idea and how detailed your Beta video is. You have a great and clear timeline and have taken the feedback you have received and utilised it. I suggest joining some Facebook groups where you can find hairdressers and clients and receive some feedback from them. I highly suggest the Girls Advice page on Facebook as I have seen girls post topics and get a variety of answers. You could use Facebook reacts to create a poll and then allow more open-ended responses through comments. As there are tens of thousands of girls in this group, there will be some hairdressers and clients which could provide you with some valuable information for your DA.
I recently saw an interesting hair tool which trims split ends by running the tool through hair like a hair straightener. Technology such as this could certainly lower the need for hair trims done by professionals if this type of technology works well and becomes more available. You could try and do some research about the newly-found hair tools and use this for your 5 year future prediction.
I found this academic source which could help in your research as it is based on the experiences of a well-known hair dresser who has developed a variety of technologies and brands.

I see the connection between your DA and the week 4 lecture as it describes the definition of future and Chris emphasises the importance of not looking too far ahead when predicting the future. He says that ‘the future is now’ which is very relevant for your DA topic. Hairdressing has changed over time but the best place to start with predicting the future technology is in the present. I can’t wait to see how your DA develops futher!
